DUE DILIGENCE SAVES LIVES AND LEGAL FEES
"We've got a suspected gas line hit"

It was mid-afternoon on a fall day when the 911 operator received the call: "We've got a suspected gas line hit". A contractor working in a residential area in Saanich on Vancouver Island had hit a Centra gas line. His call to 911 brought police and fire crews to the scene of the accident where neighbors had to be evacuated from their homes while crews worked to...

The "Real" Costs of a Hit
In February, CNN ran footage of an underground gas line explosion captured on home video by a fleeing family. Two thousand people were evacuated during the incident and 300 lost their homes. The cause? A construction crew had hit an underground natural gas pipeline.

Every year in the United States more than 200 people lose their lives
American researchers tracked the "real" costs of a $15,000 gas line repair bill and found the grand total - without accounting for lost product or legal fees as a result of litigation - exceeded $US300,000.
as a result of a pipeline or cable incident. And as more and more facilities are placed underground the risk of accidents and death rises accordingly.

Risk managers like Dennis Webb at BC Tel believe that companies owning facilities which could potentially pose a risk to the public must operate to best protect the public's interests. One step buried facility owners and operators can take to better protect both their company's assets and public safety is to belong to BC ONE CALL.

That "due diligence" is one reason the City of Kelowna joined BC ONE CALL, but according to Rod Carle, Electrical Utilities Manager, an equally important reason was that BC ONE CALL provides a valuable customer service.

In this issue of GroundBreaking News we look at the "real" costs of a hit and introduce you to one of BC ONE CALL's newest members, the City of Kelowna.
