ASKED QUESTIONS
As companies, municipalities and other owners
and operators of buried facilities meet with BC ONE CALL representatives,
some common questions about the service arise. If you are not yet
a member of BC ONE CALL here is some information to support your decision
to sign on for safety.

Q. What is BC ONE
CALL?
A. BC ONE CALL is a non-profit association providing a public service
for British Columbians. Its members include the owners and operators
of buried facilities such as pipelines, water utilities, telecommunications
cables, and its users include anyone who plans to disturb the ground
in B.C.
Q. Is there a charge
to the caller using BC ONE CALL?
A. No. The call is free
using the 1-800-474-6886 number and air time is donated on both
cellular networks using *6886.
Q. Once BC ONE CALL receives a call requesting locate information
who provides the facility location information?
A. The member company.
BC ONE CALL does not do locates. We advise the excavator which member
companies are being notified and the member follows procedures already
in place for advising people of the location of buried facilities.
Q. Are members required
to provide BC ONE CALL with computer-ready maps showing the location
of facilities?
A. No. BC ONE CALL sends
members forms of the appropriate rural or municipal areas and the
member indicates the location of its buried facilities on the map
grid. We then enter the data onto our computer system.
Q. We have a procedure
in place for handling locate calls. What does BC ONE CALL do that
we don't?
A. We save you time
and money. Our operators are dedicated to handling locate requests
and have a systematic approach for collecting the necessary information.
By using BC ONE CALL you free your staff up to focus on other tasks
yet ensure you operate with due diligence.
Q. How much does it
cost to join?
A. All members pay a
$3.50 fee per notification and a one-time fee of between $100 -
$2,500. Shareholders, who have a seat on the Board of Directors,
also pay one-time fee of $30,000. We anticipate that as membership
grows, costs will decrease.
Q. What are the benefits
of joining BC ONE CALL?
A. Reduced risk of accidents,
injury, environmental or facility damage and down time, as well
as improved safety and lower litigation and compensation costs.
